How Often Should You Change Your Spark Plugs?

How Often Should You Change Your Spark Plugs? - Sacramento Specialty Automotive

Spark plugs are a small part of your car, but they do play a mighty role. Just like any other part of your vehicle that needs maintenance, you will want to know ahead of time just how often you need to change your spark plugs to make sure your engine works properly and starts without an issue. Without your spark plugs your vehicle will begin to fail to start when you go to turn it on. It is imperative that you make sure your spark plugs are working correctly. Changing your spark plugs at the right time is essential to your vehicle starting and running the way it should.

The spark plugs are in your vehicle to create a spark that will be used to ignite the fuel and air that is in the engine cylinders that are in your vehicle. This will create combustion, thus engaging your engine. When it comes to the spark plugs, you may not know when warning signs are being sent off. If you notice any of the following it could be a sign that your spark plugs are headed towards trouble:

  • Misfire: If there is a jerking feel or any hesitation when you are accelerating and if you smell something odd, there may be an issue.

  • Rough Idle: A rough, bouncing, or shaking feeling

  • Trouble Accelerating: You notice a loss in power when you give the vehicle gas

  • Trouble Starting: Your engine cranks over without delay or starts when you're starting your vehicle

  • Using More Gas Than Normal: You notice there is a sudden drop in gas mileage

If you notice any of these things happening with your vehicle, it may be time for you to have your spark plugs changed. In vehicles we have today, the internal computer can do a lot of work which may cause you to think your spark plugs will not need to be changed. However, this isn't the case; spark plugs will still be required to be changed, especially when you notice symptoms.

If you need spark plug replacement, we invite you to bring your vehicle to our auto repair shop today!
